Tenacious D, the hard rock comedic duo of Jack Black and Kyle Gass, returned with their new album and web series Post-Apocalypto (released on November 2 via Columbia Records). The duo celebrated the album’s release that weekend with a pair of sold out shows at Kings Theatre that kicked off the Post-Apocalypto Tour in support of the album.

We caught their night two performance on November 4 and this was our first time seeing them since their performance at Boston Calling in 2015, so in many ways, this was my first time seeing a proper show from them. This was indeed a celebration of the new album, with the band kicking off the show playing behind a screen, playing songs appropriate to the web series that were played on the screen. While it was cool to see the duo play the songs that accompanied these scenes in person, there was something about the back and forth between the web series and music that seemed to keep the fans at a distance from really getting into the show.

It wasn’t until the curtain literally feel during the beginning of “Rize of the Fenix,” following the completion of the Post-Apocalypto portion of the set and Jack Black emerged at the edge of the stage and proclaimed that the greatest hits portion of the set would begin that the crowd finally got up on their feet and the place felt like the sort of atmosphere one would expect from a band like Tenacious D.

From there Black and Kyle Gass ripped through all of their finest moments, including tracks such as “Roadie,” “The Metal,” “Kielbasa,” and of course, “Tribute” and the room was never the same, rocking out and laughing the whole way through. The one-song encore of “Fuck Her Gently” was a perfect finish that sent the entire crowd home with a gleeful smile on their face.

While it’s a fun idea to play songs off the album along with clips from the web series, it keeps the show at a bit of a distance for fans, clearly demonstrated by just how much they came alive once the regular portion of their greatest hits set kicked in. But to see Tenacious D do their thing at a historic room like Kings Theatre was completely unforgettable.
