Earlier this month Tokyo Police Club returned with new album TPC via Dine Alone Records, their fourth album as a band and their first in over four years. On October 16 they played to a very sold out Baby’s All Right where they gave us a healthy dose of the new record. The show also featured an opening performance from Maxband, which is the new project of Parquet Courts drummer Max Savage.
Considering Tokyo Police Club play much bigger venues than Baby’s All Right, this was a nice intimate showing to get to see the band in action. They shared 10 new songs from TPC and worked in a few older selections to help break it up.
It’s hard to believe that Tokyo Police Club have been around for 12 years now, steadily carving out a career as one of the few remaining survivors of the indie “blog rock” scene that helped provide them buzz during the release of their still great A Lesson in Crime EP. They’ve found a way to mainteam this success by making music on their own terms and never following any trends or going out of their comfort zone.
Following performances of “Ready to Win” and “Favourite Colour,” the band took requests from the crowd, which resulting in a great closing trio of “Be Good,” “Hot Tonight,” and “Your English Is Good.” (kudos to the band for ignoring the request of “Bambi” from two young fans who literally would not stop talking throughout the night, disrupting the show for everyone involved.)
They’ll be back in March for a bigger performance at Warsaw (get tickets here). For now, enjoy some shots from both Maxband and Tokyo Police Club below, along with the setlist.
