Local Natives are currently in-between records which gave Kelcey Ayer some time to release music on his own as Jaws Of Love. It’s a lush and highly personal album full of the ballads that you could often find on their records, but with a deeper exploration on personal ruminations and electronic soundscapes that may not fit on a Local Natives record.
This year he released his debut album Tasha Sits Close to the Piano via House Arrest. On December 8, Ayer brought Jaws Of Love to make its New York City live debut for a special performance at the Park Church Co-Op in Brooklyn.
The night began with an opening set by Combat!, the project of Mark Nieto, who played alongside Kelcey as Jaws Of Love and also helped on the record as well as some additional production.
Together the two dove into the albums gorgous tracks, with the space of the church working as a perfect venue for these sounds to expand and reach out in a deeply personal manner. Along with the Jaws Of Love songs, Ayer gave us some beautiful stripped down renditions of his Local Natives offerings “Cubism Dream” and “Colombia,” with the latter being performed on the church’s piano during the encore, along with a fun cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “Sara.”
As a longtime follower of Local Natives, it was wonderful to see Ayer do his thing solo, especially in such a grand fashion at a truly beautiful venue, which is certainly a hidden gem of sorts.
