Australian electronic rockers Cut Copy returned with their first album in four years with Haiku from Zero, which Astralwerks released this September. On November 24 they made their long-awaited live return to New York with a post-Thanksgiving performance at Terminal 5, where they played when they were last in town, back in 2014.
Going into a Cut Copy show, you better bring your dancing shoes, as those Aussies bring it every single time. Over the years they’ve assembled quite a collection of big-time dance songs that work so well because of the way they mix live instruments with the electronic aspects of their sound. This makes all the difference live and makes them more of an electronic rock band than just your typical “electronic act” with just a laptop.
They ran through all the best efforts from their discography, opening the night in epic fashion with “Need You Now,” new album standout “Black Rainbows,” and “Where I’m Going.” This got the crowd worked up good and early and they were eating out of their hand from there on out. They found a groove and never let up, keeping a good balance between tracks both old and new, keeping the feet of Terminal 5 happily shuffling to the beats and huge choruses that they deliver in a way that seems so damn effortless and natural.
During their always epic performance of “Hearts On Fire,” they even brought out the saxophonist who played on the recording, which was a nice surprise. But it was the end of the regular set that hit a true high, with the one-two punch of “Take Me Over” and “Out There On The Ice,” and then the two songs encore of “Meet Me In A House Of Love” and “Lights and Music” absolutely sealed the deal.
