Originally hailing from Australia, Hazel English saw her music career take off after a move to Oakland, California and caught the attention of music blogs with an impressive set of singles and debut EP in 2016’s Never Going Home which has a dreamy sense of nostalgia attached to it. It’s not too surprising to learn that it was produced by Day Wave’s Jackson Phillips.
She’s since signed to Polyvinyl Records and has embarked on tour in support of her new release which is a combination of her debut EP along with a new one in Just Give In.
Her tour brought her back to New York for an intimate performance at new Brooklyn venue Elsewhere at the Zone One section of the venue. This was my first visit to the new venue and it was a perfect fit for the lovely tunes of both Hazel English and D.C. band The Sea Life.
English and her four-piece band nicely went through her small but efficient collection of tracks which had the crowd with here all the way through. It was a poliete and often quiet crowd, but as the show went along they got more and more into it and by the time that the final two tracks “I’m Fine” and standout “Never Going home” came around, they were singing every word along with her.
It was amazing to see considering she technically hasn’t released a debut full-length yet, but already has such a following. I’m sure that she will be back in no time and the crowd will only get bigger.
