On August 26 I made my first ever trip out to the Jones Beach Theater in Wantagh, New York for a great night of classic rock consisting of both Alice Cooper and Deep Purple.
It was also my first time seeing either of these legendary rock artists perform live and what a combination it was. Although Alice Cooper went on first, this was really his show to steal and that he did. His set was totally lived in the old school style of metal theatrics included pyro, fire, a giant frankenstein creature running around the stage and Cooper’s famous beheading. Getting to hear hits like “No More Mr. Nice Guy” and “School’s Out” was totally fulfilling and a total blast.
It’s a tough act to follow, but Deep Purple were plenty up to the task. While their set was no where near as flashy or theatrical, they let their musicianship and songs do all their talking. It was great to see the interplay between the band as they ripped through tracks such as “Space Truckin’,” and of course, “Smoke On The Water.”
