Wild Beasts returned to New York once again for a pair of shows at both Music Hall of Williamsburg and Le Poisson Rouge in support of their 2016 album Boy King which was released via Domino Records. I caught the band at LPR on November 16, and it although it was a similar setlist to the one they played at Baby’s All Right earlier in the year, it was a very different performance.
The band were more mobile, with vocalists Tom Fleming and Hayden Thorpe eager to come into the crowd and perform songs on the cusp of the audience, and even within it. They were less tolerant of photographs of every kind, telling photographers and fans to put them away early into the show. Even after a few fans got scolded by Fleming for ignoring their wishes, one inebriated fan didn’t get the message, but instead of further scolding the ignorant drunk, Thorpe took the fans phone and took an on-stage selfie video of himself and the band during a song. Kind of a weird reward that sent a mixed message to the rest of the audience.
But the band sounded great as always, performing a mix of newer Boy King songs that are able to truly shine in a live environment, as well as a flury of old favorites such as “Hooting & Howling” and “All The King’s Men.”
