On a beautiful summer night back in July, UK’s Super Furry Animals returned back to New York City for a rescheduled show at Webster Hall. The band were supposed to play the Levitation Festival in Austin (aka, the festival formally known as the Austin Psych Fest) but when bad weather cancelled that entire festival, it forced the band to reschedule their US based East Coast dates around that time to later in the year.
Although the band were touring without the support of a new album, that didn’t stop them from playing a 16 song set that included some deeper cuts than we’re used to hearing them play. The set also included the new single, “Bing Bong” to which frontman Gruff Rhys told the crowd “if we played this show a few months ago, we wouldn’t have played this song” which led to applause from the crowd (and rightfully so, because its fun and should become a permanent staple in their live shows for years to come).
Throughout the night Rhys also held up various signs to communicate to the audience without literally saying a word to the crowd. Some included, “LOUDER,” “APE SHIT,” and my favorite, “PROLONGED APPLAUSE.” This continued throughout the set with some laughter from the crowd and even into the encore where SFA came out in typical SFA fashion (pun totally intended) donning their signature furry animal costumes. Then, of course yet another sign emerged from the stage stating “RESIST PHONY ENCORES” which easily solidified this set as one of the funnest I’ve seen all year.
