On June 22 Mutual Benefit kicked off his two-night run in New York with a performance at Mercury Lounge (they’d play Baby’s All Right the following night). The show was an “early show” with doors at 6:30 and the performance kicking off soon after, with an opening performance from Florist, who released their debut album The Birds Outside Sang, earlier in the year via Double Double Whammy.
The performance came in support of their beautiful new album Skip A Sinking Stone (released via Mom + Pop Music). He performed almost all of the new album, with a good chunk of the second half played in a moving medley that came towards the second half of the show as well.
Frontman Jordan Lee was impressed with the crowds enthusiasm, exclaiming “I can’t believe you guys are so hyped out while it’s still daylight out,” after the opening combo of “Madrugada” and “Skipping Stones.” He also dedicated “Golden Wake” to anyone whose an intern right now (20-30% of the room he guessed) and was full of humerous lighthearted banter that is an interesting contrast to the sweeping delicacy of his music.
