On the night before their performance at Panorama, Canadian greats Broken Social Scene made their live return to New York for a very intimate performance at Music Hall of Williamsburg, their first live show in New York in years since their hiatus. The show was opened by Luke Temple of Here We Go Magic, who also were performing at Panorama.
I was always ashamed that I never did get to see Broken Social Scene live, but getting to see their first show in New York in years, and at a tiny club show made me forgive myself. They opened with “KC Accidental,” “7/4 (Shoreline)” and “Cause = Time,” and you can imagine how wild the starved crowd went as a result. They followed it by giving us everything that you’d want out of a Broken Social Scene set, such as “Texico Bitches,” “Sweetest Kill,” and even “Anthems for a Seventeen Year-Old Girl.”
While it a good chunk was a welcome dose of nostalgia, there was also a look towards the future with new song “Gonna Get Better.” The band’s Kevin Drew emphasized how happy they were to be back, and promised that new music was on the way. Based on their return for two encores, and that the crowd was begging for a third, it seems that the thirst for more Broken Social Scene hasn’t been quenched, but with more work coming in the foreseeable future, it’s going to be exciting to see what they come back with.
