After catching fellow The Crookes at Highline Ballroom, I ran over to catch fellow Brit-rockers The Subways at The Studio at Webster Hall. It was their first performance in New York in eight years after a long absence from North American touring. I mean eight years, that’s a hell of a long time. It’s even harder to believe that the trio’s debut album Young For Eternity was released in 2005. Where has the time gone?
I was too young to catch them back when they actually were still touring around these parts, so in a way the eight year break felt appropriate to my own narrative. Everyone in the tiny Studio at Webster Hall was eager to get another look at The Subways, and it was made that much more special considering how tiny the venue was for them. The original lineup of Billy Lunn, Charlotte Cooper and Billy’s brother, Josh Morgan were back in action, and seemed genuinely enthused to be back in New York City playing their songs again.
They ran through tracks both old and new, with the old favorites from Young For Eternity no doubt running supreme. The crowds reaction to songs like “Mary,” “Oh Yeah,” “I Want to Hear What You Have Got to Say,” and of course, “Rock & Roll Queen,” took me back more than ten years, and sent home with a smile on my face.
