On April 13 the powerful live duo Alison Mosshart Jamie Hince, otherwise known as The Kills, played to a sold out Brooklyn crowd at Warsaw, the second show of a pair of made up dates they originally had set from last year. Those shows got pushed back so they could finish up their work on their newly released album Ash & Ice, which was released this June via Domino Records.
Opening the show was the absolutely bonkers Kim and the Created, the project of Los Angeles resident Kim House. The trio delivered a frantic set of sweltering garage rock, that featured House running around the stage like a madwomen, with rock and roll antics that I thought were long gone. I was completely blown away by Kim and the Created, to the point where I’d easily call them one of the best opening acts that I’ve seen all year.
Mosshart and Hince have created quite a following as The Kills, and it doesn’t take very long into their live performances to be reminded why. Although they’re of course backed by a full band, the ability of those two to lead us through such a dirty, sweaty, rock and roll experience is really a testament to them and the genre of rock. They live, breath, and deliver everything that makes the genre great, with an ever expanding set of songs that continue to find new legs and ways to impressive live. The new songs off the album sounded seamless alongside other favorite, and the fact we got to see them do it at Warsaw instead of the inevitable larger show, was a treat in itself.
