On April 14 Iggy Pop took his latest tour up to Port Chester, New York for a sold out performance at The Capitol Theatre. The performance was an exciting one for me as it was one of the smaller venues on the tour, as the rest of the stops including larger theatre’s, such as United Palace, which they played a few days prior. There’s also the fact that Matt Helders (of Arctic Monkeys) and Josh Homme (of Queens Of The Stone Age), were playing with Iggy, just as they did on his great new album Post Pop Depression, which was released via Loma Vista Recordings.
As the curtains were cast aside, Josh Homme, Helders, and the rest of the band which include Dean Fertita + Troy Van Leeuwen (also of Queens Of The Stone Age) and Matt Sweeny (of Chavez), jumped straight into Iggy’s “Lust For Life,” sounding as tight as you’d come to expect. Iggy sprinted out to join them, and the rest of the night was led by him and his shirtless wild energy. At 69-years-old, Pop still looks and sounds great. Not only was he able to move around like a man 40 years his senior, but he even went so far as to jump over the entire photo pit, and dive into the crowd for a crowd-surf. If that doesn’t justify Iggy’s claim as one of the last real rockstars, I don’t know what will.
The band sounded great in their delivery of the very Queens Of The Stone age sounding new material from Post Pop Depression, but also in their faithful deliverance of classic Pop tracks such as “Repo Man,” “China Girl,” and “The Passenger.” Getting to see Pop on this tour with such a great backing band behind him was a great experience, and I hope that Pop keeps them around whenever he does decide to do this all again.
