Even if you know Baltimore, Maryland group The Snails, there’s a chance you know a few of the members. Led by Sam Herring and William Cashion of Future Islands, the Snails acts as a fun side-project for them that Future Islands fans will have no problem adoring in similar fashion. They released their debut album Songs From the Shoebox earlier this year via Ideas For Housecrafts, and came to New York on March 9 for a headlining performance at Baby’s All Night (they’d play Mercury Lounge the following evening).
Dressed up in snail costumes and shells made out of balloons in black bags, the Snails stayed true to their name and brought us along for the ride. There’s a lot of similarity to Future Islands, which is always going to be the case when you got Herring’s ever familiar yelps and the distinct bass work of Cashion. There are added elements including some horns and jazzed up sections that give them a new flavor, especially in the live setting.
This was a fun show, one that was made perfect at an intimate venue such as Baby’s All Right.
