On February 5 the talented British singer/producer Jamie Woon made his return to New York for a sold out performance at Bowery Ballroom. This was Woon’s first New York so in some time, as there was a four year gap between his 2011 debut album Mirrorwriting and last year’s follow-up Making Time (out via Polydor Records). This was my first time seeing Woon since his much more intimate performance at Glasslands in 2011, which featured only Woon.
This time around Woon had a full band backing him up, which included two male backing singers, delighted the capacity audiences with lively takes of tracks from both albums, effortlessly blending the stylings of pop, r&b, electronic dance. Tracks like “Lady Luck” and “Night Air” sounded as magical as ever, if not more so than on record. Woon’s voice is one that is meant to be heard live, shared in the largest way imaginable.
