Last week English rock group Fat White Family brought their always intense live show of controlled chaos back to New York for a pair of shows at Baby’s All Right in Brooklyn (May 2), and at Le Poisson Rouge in Manhattan (May 3, where Lady GaGa showed up). Somehow Baby’s All Right is the only place that I’ve ever seen the band (this was my fourth time seeing them) and this show on May 2 was a rowdy good time as always.
The group is touring behind their new record Songs For Our Mothers (released via Fat Possum), an expansion of the sound of their controversial debut album Champagne Holocaust. The setlist featured tracks from both records, which blend into one another during the drunken frenzy that broke out in Baby’s. The band, sporting a few new live members from the last time I saw them, were actually relatively calm compared to previous shows. Frontman Lias Saoudi took his shirt off but kept his pants on and although he poured a few beers on thirsty members of the front row and went for a crowd-surf, he too was pretty tame from his usual self.
That said, the crowd at Baby’s that night meant business, featuring all kinds of shoving and moshing, to the point where a bunch of fans got shoved so hard that they fell onto the front of the stage. I’m pretty sure that Fat White Family are the only band who are totally fine with beers being flung on stage at them, which pretty much sums up the crazy experience that always is a Fat White Family live show.
The night also featured a great set from great Canadian rockers Dilly Dally who are duel-headlining with Fat White Family during this tour, along with local act Roya who opened before them. Find photos of all three bands posted below.
