On December 21 I took in my final show of the year, with the debut NYC performance from Big Grams, the new collaboration between Big Boi and Phantogram. The show went down at Irving Plaza, and was an intimate first look at the new group that set out to mix both hip-hop with electronic pop/rock.
The Big Boi/Phantogram partnership was first revealed on Big Boi’s 2012 album Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors, which featured three collaborations between the two. With the Outkast reunion and Phantogram’s own new material their collaboration took longer than we anticipated, but last September saw the released of their debut self-titled EP via Epic Records.
Their Irving Plaza show featured all of the EP plus a few as well as favorites from both artists catalogues, such as Phantogram’s “Black Out Days” and Big Boi’s “CPU.” The latter being one of the earlier collaborations between the two, paved the way for mash-ups of sorts of both artists tracks, such as “Ms. Jackson” being teamed up with “Mouthful of Diamonds” and “The Way You Move” tied into “Don’t Move.” It was great to hear both artists material turned into something completely new and exciting.
This is only the start of this wonderful collaboration, with some bigger shows and festivals planned for this year, and possibly a full-length album.
For now, enjoy some photos from this performance posted below, along with the setlist and shots of opening act Go Dreamer.
