On July 7 there was a great lineup of music to be found at Music Hall of Music, featuring a stacked bill of up-and-coming talent in the form of Alex G, Girlpool, Frankie Cosmos, and Hello Shark.
I was only able to get there in time for Alex G, but it was yet another great showing from the always impressive Philadelphia musician who has steadily built a rock solid fanbase in New York that follows his every move. There’s a lot to be excited about with Alex, whose really only getting started.
Girlpool, the L.A. duo of Cleo Tucker and Harmony Tividad, have had quite a year. Last winter they released their debut EP to great acclaim, and this year they quickly followed that up with their impressive debut album Before The World Was Big, both released via Wichita Recordings.
While I enjoy the duo’s recordings, they take a very different shape live. Although there’s a simplicity to their music, that’s a part of the charm, and live you’re able to really absorb this. They mixed songs from their debut album and EP to great results, and delighted us with their warm personalities and wicked sense of humor. People seem to really gravitate towards these girls, and I can see why. There’s a lot to love about Girlpool.
