New York City has seen a recent pattern emerging of late. The pattern is the booking of fantastic bands that hail from the UK, all playing venues that tend to be on the smaller side. If any of these shows were in the UK, these bands would be playing venues twice maybe three times as as big, or even arenas which makes these shows that much more special for us here in the city.

A prime example of this happening is when The Wombats rolled into a sold out show at Webster Hall on April 27th, touring in support of their fantastic new album Glitterbug. Supporting and along for the ride were openers Cheerleader and Life in Film, and they did not disappoint.

First up was Cheerleader, a fantastic band hailing from not too far away in Philadelphia. By the time they took the stage, half the venue was already filled out and the pressure was on. Their sound filled out the venue very nicely, and the crowd gave them a very deserving response which they have got to be very happy with. Be on the lookout for their new album, which is slated to release on May 19th.

Next up was fellow UK band, Life in Film. This was my first time catching them as well, and while they haven’t released a full length album yet, they have released several strong EP’s and singles. The energy they brought by the 4-piece band was impressive and exciting to see. It also certainly shows a promising future for their full length album, that should be out sometime this year very soon.

The feeling of anticipation for The Wombats was looming over the jam packed sold out crowd at Webster, and as soon as they took the stage you knew this show would be something special. They opened with Glitterbug’s “Your Body is a Weapon,” and there wasn’t a soul in the venue that wasn’t jumping. I’ve been to shows at Webster countless times and this was the first time I’ve felt the entire place shake due to everybody jumping. It was so crazy at one point that bassist Tord Nudsen even acknowledged the crowd that he felt the stage bouncing with the crowd’s jumping. Pretty impressive feat indeed, but with a band like the Wombats, I wouldn’t expect anything less from the crowd.
