On Friday night both Bauer and Will made the trek into Baby’s All Right for an unusual bit of joint partnership coverage. Will was able to catch Multimagic’s set, but had to run right after to catch Francisco The Man in Manhattan. Bauer got in just in time to catch sets from both New Myths and Monogold.
Multimagic made the trek to Baby’s all the way from Cincinnati, for their 2nd performance in New York City ever. The 5-piece band, led by Coran Stetter, makes exciting, well polished synth-rock, that aims high towards the stars. The few demos (such as the previously shared “Control”) that they’ve shared on soundcloud don’t quite do them justice. In the live setting they’re vibrant performers who are not only confident on stage, but fluid and tight, comfortably rocking out while they belt out every lyric. There’s a delightful widescreen nature to their songs that beg you to dance, cheer, and lose a bit of yourself along the way. I’m excited for you guys to discover Multimagic, and see them live for yourselves. Find their new demo “Sun Dress” posted below along with photos from their set. – Will
After Will caught the end of Multimagic’s set, he headed on into Manhattan and I (Bauer) was able to catch the remaining sets from Brooklyn’s own New Myths and Monogold. I was excited to see New Myths play live again as the last time I saw them play was back in November when they played their last show at Glasslands (RIP).
The show was a special one for New Myths because they were playing in celebration of their beautiful vinyl release (photo of the LP can be found below) of their album which released last year, Give Me Noise. Similar to what Will had noticed & mentioned earlier regarding songs shared on soundcloud not doing the songs justice at all, all of New Myths’ songs are also something else that you need to experience live. The rhythm section led by drummer Rosie Slater and bassist Marina Ross chugs along with so much solid force while guitarist Brit Boras holds it all together with the dreamy synth and alluring guitar work. We were also treated to the news that a video for their single “Howl” is coming very soon, and will see the light of day sometime in March.
After New Myth’s set, Monogold took to the stage and the three piece from Brooklyn wasted absolutely no time jumping into their set. It was my first time seeing them live and I had noticed something immediately after the first few songs they played. Similar to both Multimagic and New Myths, Monogold’s songs live have a completely different life to them live. While the recorded songs are still very beautiful, the energy of the songs live just don’t compare to the recordings at all. Their indie–pop infused songs have a very dreamy & airy quality about them, while still feeling totally grounded at the same time. Proof can be found on their fantastic EP This Bloom that was released in November of last year which just begs to be the soundtrack to your spring and summer this year.
The night overall was filled with excellent and exciting polished synth-rock all around from all three bands. Do yourself a huge favor and check all of them out live next time they’re in town – you won’t be sorry.
