Ask most anybody heading into CMJ for what bands they were trying to see during the marathon, a good majority would tell you Tweens were one of them. At least that was the case when I asked fellow music bloggers and lovers that question.
I caught a set from them at Arlene’s Grocery on Wednesday evening, and the group didn’t disappoint. They’re led by energetic frontwoman Bridget Battle, who almost reminds me a bit of Alison Pill’s portrayal of Kim Pine in Scott Pilgrim vs The World. She had a fierce energy on stage that was controlled but on the brink of exploding in a big way. Their self-described (on their facebook) genre of “trash-pop” is pretty damn accurate, as they got some pop-minded melodies over some brash garage riffs. They got a pretty wide appeal that should, and will, attract fans of all genders and ages. As all good music should…
Their debut album is out now via Frenchkiss Records. I enjoy what I saw from Tweens live, they got a positive attitude and can get a room moving. Hope to see them perform again sometime soon. The future is definitely bright for them.
