Today saw Kelcey Ayer (formerly of Local Natives) release his new single ” No Sleep”, the title track from his debut EP that will be released on July 18th via Awal.
The single documents his descent into madness from not sleeping when his son was first born. It features an enchanting blend of spoken word of modern musings paired with ethereal electronic flourishes that create a magnetic and hypnotic sense of cinematic wonder. The lyrical content sees Ayer step into a never-ending stream of consciousness that is all too relatable and hilarious.
Speaking further about the song, he adds:
“When my wife and I had our first child, we were absolutely floored at how little sleep you get. The song is basically me spiraling into madness. I took that cliche phrase you see on shirts at tourist gift shops “don’t talk to me until I’ve had my coffee,” and just added crazier and crazier conditions to it. I had so much fun just trying to make myself laugh, which is not the way making music typically goes, so that was refreshing. I self-engineered/produced the track in my home studio in LA.”
