Nashville-based singer-songwriter mxmtoon is a literal internet celebrity. First gaining recognition in 2017 for her self-released music through YouTube, mxmtoon, who otherwise prefers to go simply by Maia, has gained large followings on numerous social media platforms, including TikTok and Twitch, where she chats with fans and streams video games like Minecraft and Fortnite.
Maia’s large following and love of gaming has even afforded her the opportunity to appear in video games such as Life is Strange: True Colors, where she provides the singing voice of the main character Alex, as well as Dave the Diver, where she appears as pixelated version of herself and performs songs off of Liminal Space, mxmtoon’s third full-length album released this past November via AWAL.
In addition to the unconventional method of promoting the new album through a video game collaboration, mxmtoon also embarked on a more traditional headlining tour, which has seen the artist travel North America from coast to coast since February. April 3rd found mxmtoon in New York, specifically at Brooklyn Bowl, with support from Toronto-based artist Katherine Li.
Accompanied by Jenn Clemena on guitar, Matthew Kuo on bass, and Val Sepulveda on drums, mxmtoon churned out a setlist comprising the entirety of Liminal Space and peppered with fan favorites from previous albums and EPs. While mxmtoon’s most recently released material was received enthusiastically, the biggest reactions from the audience came in response to songs like “Prom Dress,” “Seasonal Depression” which featured a more rock-focused arrangement, and “Mona Lisa.” During “Mona Lisa” in particular, Maia showed off her command of the crowd by encouraging loud sing-alongs and getting the audience to wave their arms in the air from side to side. The brief acoustic set midway through, which found Maia alone on stage performing songs off of mxmtoon’s debut EP plum blossom on ukelele, featured loud and passionate sing-alongs from the adoring crowd.
