M(h)aol, whose members are based in Dublin, Cork, Belfast, and London, have been a band we’ve had our eye on since we found their single “Therapy” in 2023. They will return with their new album Something Soft on May 16th, which will be their first for Merge Records.
On March 9th the band made their way to TV Eye in Ridgewood marking their U.S. debut. The shows came before they headed off to Austin, Texas for SXSW. The performance featured opener Mallory Hawk filling in for Pixie Cut Rhythm Orchestra’s Sarah Deegan due to visa issues.
The band ripped through tracks from their new album which features their brand of post-punk indie that has a tension and experimental nature that taps into a primal sense of sonic space that reminds of fellow Irish acts like Gilla Band. We’re excited to hear the recorded versions of the new material, and to catch them again the next time that they’re back in our neck of the woods.
