UK indie rockers Squid returned over the weekend with their sophomore album, O Monolith (via Warp), another step forward for the innovative band. They harness the creative energy and sonic explorations that they delivered so confidently on their 2021 debut album Bright Green Field.
On tracks such as single “The Blades”, you get the full spectrum and scope of their sound, a dense and thoughtful track that has piles and piles of ideas compressed into one wonderous sonic template. The genius is that they deliver so much while still creating an inviting sound full of beauty and grace, and oddly catchy hooks.
O Monolith is an impressive effort that will ultimately end up as one of the highlights of the 2023 musical calendar, with new layers revealing themself with every new listen.
