Last week Lower Dens released their brand new album Escape From Evil, which was released via Domino Records imprint Ribbon Music. To celebrate the records release, the band played a sold out release show at Baby’s All Right, featuring opening sets from Matteah Baim and Gold Dime.
The only other time I caught Lower Dens live was at the Pitchfork Music Festival in 2012. Obviously this was a much different experience, a few years removed with a new album and a new live guitarist.
The night was all about Escape From Evil, which the band played in its entirety through the evening (not in order). The new songs sounded sharp live, with frontwoman Jana Hunter mainly just handling the vocals, letting the band carry the rest of the weight. There were a few lighthearted screw ups that the band laughed off, but once they got things right, they hit it out of the park. They also threw in old familiar tracks such as “I Get Nervous,” “Tea Lights,” as well as the encore finishing touch of “Brains” (into “Stem”) that still sounds as powerful as ever.
Lower Dens will return to New York soon for a June 11 performance at Music Hall of Williamsburg as a part of the Northside Festival. Tickets for that are still on sale.
