They’re going to need a bigger boat. Ron Howard’s upcoming biographical drama In the Heart of the Sea (based on Nathaniel Philbrick’s novel of the same name) details the amazing true story of the whaling ship Essex, which was destroyed by a gigantic sperm whale in 1820. It’s quite a whale of a tale, but the actual events that transpired on that ship’s final voyage are quite fantastic. Don’t go reading the Wikipedia article if you don’t want to spoil it!
It seems as though the size comparison in the poster is more of a symbol for the immense isolation the crew felt at sea…we’re not talking Godzilla-whale here. Though, the length of the ship was about 88 feet, and sperm whales can reach lengths of almost 70 feet. Not too shabby.
The film stars Chris Hemsworth (working again with Howard after the brilliant Rush), Cillian Murphy, Benjamin Walker (Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter), and Tom Holland (The Impossible) among others. With the epic premises, cast, and director in line, it looks like a winner.
