You may know Nick Allbrook as the former bassist of Tame Impala who used to keep to himself in the back of the stage. Well he also just happens to front the Australian band Pond alongside some other Tame Impala members, and with them, he’s an entirely different person.
I caught the band at Rough Trade NYC on October 18, and it took me aback how much of a frontman that Allbrook is. He’s energetic, showy, and very much himself. He leads the pack of a drug-induced offering of floaty psych-rock anthems. When they weren’t offering of dreamy almost Beatles moments (say parts of “Giant Tortoise”) they offered some pulsating songs with an underlying dance groove that had the entire room bobbing along.
The band played some songs off their soon to be released new album Man It Feels Like Space Again (January 27, 2015), all of which fit snugly alongside the rest of the set, which was mainly taken from 2013’s slightly underrated Hobo Rocket. Something tells me that Man It Feels Like Space Again will be one the bands biggest release yet, propelling them to the heights that they so clearly deserve.
