I can’t believe it has come to this, but there’s a new trailer for the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. It was inevitable, really, as Transformers: Age of Extinction is out this Friday, and what goes better with a Michael Bay movie than a trailer for an upcoming Michael Bay-produced film. Anyway, let’s get to the trailer.
Somewhere between the Bay color palate, the robo-Shredder, the rocket-powered skateboard, and the unnecessary dubstep, I lost my interest. While it is just a trailer and I shouldn’t judge the film on it and it alone, I can’t help but do so. The product placement (namely in Times Square) is blatant, the big action set-pieces are totally Bay, and the character design of the Turtles isn’t growing on me. Their lips may look a little better, but they’re still too humanoid for my liking. Also, the voice cast isn’t fully together, but I could swear I picked out Jesse Eisenberg as one of the Turtles. As for the human cast, Will Arnett could be a bright spot as Vernon, but Megan Fox doesn’t inspire any hope. Whoopi Goldberg is an unexpected surprise, though. Still, it’s a big-budget nostalgia-driven popcorn flick, so what else can I expect from it?
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles follows the four Turtles (Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael, and Donatello), Splinter (voiced by Tony Shalhoub), and April O’Neil (Megan Fox) in their attempt to protect New York City from the Foot Clan and Shredder. Jonathan Liebesman directs off of a script from Josh Appelbaum, Andre Nemec, and Evan Daugherty. It hits theaters on August 8th (and will probably still be trounced by Guardians of the Galaxy at the box office – one can hope).
