Thursday saw Liars stop by Le Poisson Rogue for their tour for new album Mess. It was night one of a two night run in New York. They followed that up with a show Friday night at The Wick, a new venue in Brooklyn.

The show featured an opening solo set by Jana Hunter of Lower Dens. She captivated us with a entertaining performance that featured some very enjoyable material, some of which had heavy new wave dance inspirations, giving off a heavy New Order vibe. Her set included Lower Dens’ “Brains” as well as a cover of Hall and Oats’ “Maneater.”

After many passing years I finally was able to see Liars live. To be blunt, it was a great. Liars deliver a very visceral experience live, one that is truly passionate and all about giving in to your inhibitions and letting the sound do the speaking for you. That’s exactly what frontman Angus Andrew does on stage. He came out in a colorful mask that he wore during the first few songs and was not afraid to be as expressionistic as possible. His presence was felt, along with the more reserved ones of Aaron Hemphill and Butchy Fuego who is currently drumming for them.

Set highlights included their most recent single “Mess On A Mission” as well as WIXIW cuts “No. 1 Against The Rush” and “Brats”, the latter of which was an absolute beast live with its throbbing bass sending everyone in the crowd into a trance. The heavy hitting “Plaster Casts of Everything” finished off the regular set, with Liars coming out for a final encore.

After such a long wait, I can assure you that Liars live show is as great of a live experience as you’d expect.
