Jamie xx’s music video for “Sleep Sound” is rather touching. It features the video’s director Sofia Mattioli dancing with members of the Manchester Deaf Center, who responded to the movement of Mattilo and the vibrations in the air that the song gave off.
Here’s Mattilo’s explanation.
I was on a train listening to music, getting deep into it, and this girl started staring at me. After a while I took my headphones off and she came up to me, started signing and then wrote me a note to say that she was deaf but could almost feel the music by my movement.
From there she was inspired by the relationship between silence and music, and used that as a major influence in the “Sleep Sound video. Read more about the video over at Nowness and find it posted below.
