After checking out Walter Martin’s show in Manhattan, I headed over to Brooklyn to return to Rough Trade NYC (one night after seeing Allah-Lahs there) for The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart. Although I just saw them play a great set at SXSW, I couldn’t resist an intimate New York showing.
Brooklyn’s Grand Resort opened the show up with some New Order type electronic jams that were a fun start to the evening.
Frontman Kip Berman kicked off the show with a solo performance of “Art Smock”, the lead-off track of their new album Days Of Abandon. The night served as their New York debut of tracks of the album, as well as the new band. After seeing the new band for a second time, I gotta say, they’re spectacular. Both songs old and new sounded sharp, especially their current single “Simple and Sure.”
There was plenty of room for older material to shine, such as “Heart In Your Heartbreak”, “Come Saturday”, and the always classic “Young Adult Friction.” It was a lively and energetic show, one that has me aching for their new album.
They will return to NYC this May May 22. Tickets are on sale now. Check out some more photos from the show below.
