Trailers for upcoming blockbusters seem to be everywhere in recent days, starting with Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
Marvel
On the heels of the LA premiere, the team at Marvel has released an extended trailer (included in a handy playlist down below) with some of the HALO jump and ensuing retaking of a SHIELD mobile relaunching platform from the first ten minutes of the film – which has also been released (and since taken down at the studio’s request). Then again, Winter Soldier is out next week and the onslaught of TV spots is endless. Also, Captain America 3 is slated to go up against Batman vs. Superman (or whatever the Man of Steel sequel/Justice League jumping-off point will eventually be titled) on May 6, 2016. (via Slashfilm)
Continuing on the superhero/Marvel front, both The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and X-Men: Days of Future Past are amping up for their May releases with new trailers – a final and a second trailer, respectively. Spidey plays up the impending Sinister 6 arc/spinoff, and DOFP is more action-heavy than the first trailer was, going as far as showing both ’70s and futuristic incarnations of the Sentinels. The former is out on May 2 and the latter is out on May 23.
Nostalgia/Blockbusters/Adaptations
As for other nostalgia-mining attempts, Godzilla has a new international trailer with some new bits of footage that flesh out the characters and plot a smidge, and Maleficent has yet another trailer that hints at more of Maleficent’s past. Otherwise, the second Hercules film of the year (this one starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and is a little more in the Kevin Sorbo-Hercules realm) debuted its first teaser trailer, as did the 3D CG-animated Peanuts film (which I somehow totally missed hearing about over a year ago when the initial announcement came from Blue Sky Studios). Godzilla hits theaters on May 16, Maleficent is out on May 30, Hercules battles more mythical CGI monsters on July 25, and the Peanuts gang is back on November 6, 2015.
Regarding dystopian YA adaptations, what with the recent release of Divergent and the upcoming Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1, both the classic Giver and series-launching Maze Runner debuted their first trailer last week. Philip Noyce helms a too-colorful and familiar-looking futuristic Giver (which stars Jeff Bridges as the eponymous supporting character), and Dylan O’Brien leads the Maze Runner cast (which also includes some recognizable young faces, like Thomas Brodie-Sangster and Will Poulter). The Giver is in theaters on August 15 and The Maze Runner has secured a September 19 release date.
The Festival Circuit
Meanwhile, there are several upcoming films that are getting off of the festival circuit. Oculus, a psychological/supernatural horror film about a haunted mirror, stars Karen Gillan (Doctor Who, Guardians of the Galaxy) and hits theaters on April 11 after premiering at TIFF and SXSW. Frank, a dramedy about an eccentric pop musician named Frank (Michael Fassbender) who always wears a giant head a la Arcade Fire’s “Reflektor” music video, has screened at Sundance and SXSW but has yet to secure a US release date. Tom Hardy stars as Ivan Locke in Locke, a single-setting film from writer/director Stephen Knight, has screened at several international festivals and hits US theaters on April 25 after premiering in the US at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Film Festival. And if you’re in the mood for freaky and original sci-fi, The Signal, a film about three college students who get infected by something alien, initially screened at Sundance and will see a domestic release on June 13.
Biopics
If biopics are more your speed, director Tate Taylor (The Help) has Get On Up in the pipeline for an August 1 release. The film focuses on the life and music of the Godfather of Funk and the Hardest Working Man in Show Business – James Brown (Chadwick Boseman).
Reverse Adaptations
And if you’re into film-to-TV-adaptations, Fargo is set to premiere on FX on April 15, and they’ve released several short Coen Brothers-esque teasers and a full trailer. Martin Freeman fills the shoes of William H. Macy (or a William H. Macy-like character) and Billy Bob Thorton plays a shady drifter.
