When I last saw Warpaint at Union Pool in January, it was the first time they were playing the new material off their recently released self-titled album live. This time around they returned to New York City with plenty of shows under their belt.
The wonderful Cate Le Bon opened things up and did so in a delightful fashion. Le Bon, who released her latest album Mug Museum last year, gave a tight performance that set the table for the ladies of Warpaint.
Warpaint have a dedicated fanbase, who showed their adoration for the ladies early on by showering them with roses that fans threw on stage as the ladies walked up to their spots on stage. The ladies greeted fans back with “Bees” from their debut album, before kicking into the new album’s “Intro” which led right into “Keep It Healthy.” It was wonderful as ever to see the girls rock out. Seeing the calm precision of drummer Stella Mozgawa and vocalist/guitarist Theresa Wayman was dreamy when compared alongside the more lively movements of vocalist/guitarist/keyboardist Emily Kokal and bassist Jenny Lee Lindberg who almost never kept still. It’s a joy to watch them all collectively reconstruct their songs live, and to look like they’re having so much fun doing so.
While they were only testing out the waters that were the new songs in early January, they had since returned with more confident and tighter playing of their material, acting as if they had been playing these songs forever. Warpaint delivered the goods once again.
