My adoration of Cut Copy is no secret around these parts. You all know the deal by now. Even so, each journey to one of their live shows is like falling in love with the band for the first time all over again.
Last night I caught the second of their sold out two-night run at Terminal 5. I got there just in time for them, missing out on both Jessy Lanza and Turkish Prison, who opened the show.
I was in the photo pit for the opening run of “Explorers”, “Take Me Over” and “Free Your Mind”, making it one of those times where I had to remind myself to try and take photos instead of singing along. The band just has this ability to take over a room with anthems that are truly larger than life. Their songs just bring out so much joy. The familiar joy that I got to experience again, only this time with all new people, as I placed myself somewhere in the back of the always insanely over-crowded Terminal 5 crowd.
No matter, everyone around me was in high spirits. You couldn’t find a single (sober) soul who wasn’t singing or dancing along to the anthems, whether it was “Hearts On Fire”, “Out There On The Ice” or main set closer and personal highlight, “Lights & Music.” They also brought some synth-orb grooves in the form of “Let Me Show You Love” and the mega “Sun God.” It was cool to hear them play old school track “Saturdays” which hasn’t lost any of its cool. The encore featured a wonderful performance of “Walking In The Sky” and the always epic and climatic finish of “Need You Now.”
My friends are awlays wondering how many times I can see Cut Copy and still be so enthusiastic about it. It’s because every Cut Copy show is a new experience. I go with new people, see them at new venues. Their performances bring out a new joy, a new outlook, a new high. They’re just so god damn fun, I can’t say possibly say no to a Cut Copy show.
In reality, Cut Copy are too big a band for a venue like Terminal 5, no matter how many nights they sell out. In a fair world, they and Hot Chip would tour together and sell out some huge arenas. But then again, if I get to see these wonderful Aussies in smaller places, all the better for me.
Although it may be a while, I’m already counting down the days until Cut Copy grace us with their presence once again.
I’ve posted the setlsit below, along with some photos of Cut Copy.
