The official trailer (we’re not in teaser territory anymore) for Godzilla has dropped, and I don’t know whether to be more afraid of the Kaiju King or Bryan Cranston!

After the poster release on Friday and the release of the signature sonorous roar yesterday, the theatrical trailer for Godzilla dropped by means of an official countdown. The trailer, which echoes the teaser trailer from December, focuses on an angry father (Bryan Cranston) searching for answers about something that attacked Las Vegas (as evidenced by the torn-up Lady Liberty statue) and parts of the West Coast. Little does he know that military scientists (lead by Ken Watanabe) awakened the lumbering behemoth back in the ’50s and believed they killed it with a nuke, but they didn’t expect it to return for vengeance. Scenes of destruction and mayhem (some from the teaser) are interspersed with Gyorgi Ligeti’s “Requiem” (also much like the teaser) before the trailer closes with a full-on glimpse of Godzilla and its roar. So while the full plot is still a mystery, it can be assumed that Godzilla reawakens, wrecks havoc, and it’s up to the military to stop it – simple enough, but there’s more than meets the eye here.

Godzilla, from director Gareth Edwards, roars into theaters on May 16 and also stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Sally Hawkins, Juliette Binoche, and David Strathairn.
