One of the more pleasant releases of last year (as well as one of the best) was Mutual Benefit’s Love’s Crushing Diamond. It was a very emotional album that connected to me from the very first listen, and it still continues to find ways to work its magic.
I finally caught the live show of the band’s leader Jordan Lee and it didn’t disappoint. The stage was shared by six members in total, including Jordan’s sister and a live violinist. The natural human emotion that he created on the album springs to life in the live setting, recreated in a scarily accurate fashion.
There was plenty of clever stage banter from Jordan, who mentioned how in a interview he was misquoted as saying that he believed in love, when really he said he didn’t. His response from this interview has sort of followed him around to other interviews and features, and he wanted to clarify that “romantic love is bullshit…unless you find someone special.” It was his sense of humor along with his beautiful music that made his performance quite a memorable evening.
