Last night I finally caught a Dum Dum Girls live set. They played an intimate performance at Mercury Lounge which served as a celebration for the release of their new album Too True, which is out now.
The New Lines opened the show with a Pink Floyd-esque set full of trippy pysch jams. Sapphire Mansions followed with a more guitar friendly sound that featured some solid drumming and synth work to add another layer to their sound which could be described as a London version of The Strokes.
All members of Dum Dum Girls (including a male guitarist) were uniformly dressed in black. Dee Dee expressed how chaotic the day had been, explaining why they took a while to get started, as they didn’t get a proper soundcheck beforehand. No matter, the vibe was perfect from the start, as they kicked things off with a great version of “Bedroom Eyes.” From there we got a lot of new stuff from Too True such as “In The Wake Of You,” “Under These Hands,” “Rimbaud Eyes,” and “Lost Boys And Girls Club.” They also played their cover of Pale Saints’ “Sight of You.”
Their set was quite tight and sounded clean and full of life. Dee Dee would look throughout the room constantly, making eye contact with the crowd, engaging us in the fullest way. This helped her songs connect with me even more, really making quite a difference. It has taken me quite some time to see the Dum Dum’s live, and this set didn’t disappoint at all. I left very impressed.
They return to NYC again in March playing Bowery Ballroom on March 25 and Music Hall of Williamsburg on March 26. Tickets are still available for both shows.
