Warpaint will release their fantastic new (self-titled) album next Tuesday. Last night they played a surprise intimate show at Brooklyn’s Union Pool, which is pretty amazing considering the size of the venue is somewhere around 150.
Being such a small venue, it was cool to see the band packed tightly on the stage, working closely to bring the tracks from the new album to life. The obvious goal of the evening was to serve as a warm-up gig for their upcoming tour, and to finally share the new songs to an audience. It was wonderful to hear all of the new songs for the first time, as they were all performed with tight love and care.
The duel vocal work of Emily Kokal and Theresa Wayman is wondrous, as is the bass work of Jenny Lee Lindberg and drumming of Stella Mozgawa, who both were stationed behind the former two, but rocked out just as hard, if not more.
The 10-song set included seven songs from the new album, including the two previously released tracks, “Love Is To Die” and “Biggy.” They were highlights for sure, as well as the bass-heavy “Disco Very” and previously released tracks “Bees” and “Elephants.” The latter was an epic closer that was stretched out to an epic jam that was a perfect way to close the night. They also included a new track called “No Way Out” that isn’t on their new album.
Warpaint will return to New York to play Webster Hall on March 21st. Tickets are still available.
