The Singularity is finally upon is in Transcendence. It seemed like it was yesterday when the two initial teasers were released … actually, it was.
In the first Transcendence trailer (below), the thematic element of merging humans with technology drives the plot forward as Dr. Will Caster (Johnny Depp), an AI researcher dying after an assassination attempt by members of RIFT (an anti-tech organization whose membership includes Kate Mara as Bree), is uploaded to a makeshift supercomputer based on his designs by his wife (Rebecca Hall) and best friend (Paul Bettany) as a last-ditch attempt to save his life. (Is everyone holding back on Iron Man-related jokes here? “So Maya Hansen and JARVIS decided to upload Captain Jack Sparrow into a computer …”) And then things start to hit the fan as more AI research centers are attacked by RIFT members and the digitized Will hungers for more knowledge before going full Skynet.
Apart from some landscape shots, you can see Christopher-Nolan-DP-Wally Pfister breaking through as Director-Wally Pfister, as well as some Nolan influence (including Nolan familiars Cillian Murphy and Morgan Freeman), so this is a promising start to what looks to be a thrilling yet thought-provoking examination of real-world science theory brought to movie theaters once more.
Transcendence hits theaters on April 17, 2014 in conventional 2D theaters and IMAX.
