It’s been a good six months since Gareth Edwards (Monsters) and Legendary Pictures teased their reboot of the Godzilla franchise at San Diego Comic Con with an exclusive poster, teaser, and off-site walk-through experience, and with five months to go until the film hits the screen, there is finally a trailer for Godzilla.
Wow. The delays (and choice of Edwards as director) certainly look as if they’re paying off. While a general plot still escapes us, it can be surmised that a military operation lead by David Strathairn’s character searches through a devastated metropolis to rescue civilians before (I would assume) the city is bombed out to eradicate Godzilla and whatever other giant mutated creatures are present (because there certainly will be; it’s a Godzilla movie, of course.). We’re also given glimpses of Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Bryan Cranston, Elizabeth Olsen, and Sally Hawkins in varying distressful situations. Apart from that, Godzilla is still a mystery, but it’s one that I’m glad to wait for.
Godzilla, set to hit screens (in 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D) on May 16, 2014, stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Kick-Ass), Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), Elizabeth Olsen (Oldboy), Ken Watanabe (Inception), David Strathairn (The Bourne Ultimatum), Juliette Binoche (Cosmopolis), and Sally Hawkins (Blue Jasmine). There is no official plot synopsis at this time, but there is a viral campaign in progress. The trailer is also set to unspool in front of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, along with the trailers for Interstellar (Chris Nolan’s next film), Edge of Tomorrow (an adaptation of All You Need Is Kill that stars Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt), and the Amazing Spider-Man 2 trailer that we posted about last week.
