On Saturday night Real Estate played a last minute show at the relatively new Brooklyn venue Baby’s All Right. This was my first time catching a show at the venue, which was pretty damn cool. Quite an intimate space, especially for a band like Real Estate.
I missed first opener Turnip King, I got there in time to catch Free Time. They’re a 4-piece band from the area that were a perfect fit on a bill with Real Estate, creating memorable melodies built alongside the distinctive vocals of Dion Nania. I liked them.
Up next was Chicago’s Bare Mutants. Dreary rock with a big pounding sound along with a little organ. Their songs often packed a punch but lacked a bit of variety and started to bleed together after a while. Some interesting bits, but they weren’t for me.
Although Real Estate got started a bit later than expected, it was perfectly fine, as they were legitimately apologetic about it. They made up for it immediately with the tunes. I’ve seen these guys more than a half a dozen times by now, and they have never disappointed. A good 5 or 6 songs from the set were new, some of which are already starting to sound familiar to me. The new material have jammier aspects that incorporate some of the directions and ideas that they did so well on Days. The new album, which will come out sometime next year, should be a good one.
They also included tremendous performances of all their best cuts, such as “Fake Blues”, “Younger Than Yesterday”, “Wonder Years”, “Easy”, “Green Aisles”, and the encore closer, “It’s Real.” These mixed quite well with the newer material, which isn’t always the case when a band’s set includes a lot of new songs. So kudos to Real Estate for finding a good mix, and for continuing to write damn good songs.
I can’t wait to get to hear the new album, which is surely one of my most anticipated albums of the year.
