If GEMS are playing a show in NYC, I make it a point to find myself in attendance. Last night they headlined Brooklyn’s Glasslands and took the night by storm. No matter how many times I see them, I never tire of their songs. They changed it up a bit from last time, leaving room for them to include a cover for the very first time. The cover was of Seal’s “Don’t Cry,” and man, it worked wonderfully. I’m continuously impressed by the work on Lindsay and Cliff, no matter how many times I hear their material live. It always finds a way to work its magic over me, as if I’m seeing them for the first time again.
FEMME played before GEMS, and surprised me quite a bit. Fans of acts like Santigold will find plenty of joy in the blend of indie-pop that Laura Bettinson has crafted. Coming from London, she stirrs up quite a sound, with tunes that are smart and poppy. She played a short set, but all the songs she played were instantaneous and feel good. Lead single “Fever Boy” was the clear highlight of the night, a shimmering success of a song that you need to check out immediately. Find it posted below.
Portland duo My Body got the night started with an electronic set of tunes that had equal footing in dance, electronic, and even r&b. There’s a lot of bands experimenting with the electronic r&b set, but My Body’s set last night was an encouraging one that reeks of potential.
Check out their song “Make It Good” below.
