After Comic Con teases, behind-the-scenes Twitter pictures, and the recently released triptych banner (one of which I snapped at my local AMC), The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has a trailer and an as-yet-unofficial-for-American-audiences subtitle (Rise of Electro).
At first glance, the trailer highlights the drama and money-shots of The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Peter (Andrew Garfield) is still reeling from his discoveries and increased responsibilities from the first film (including dating Gwen Stacey (Emma Stone) and brushing off any danger like he’s invincible) and unearths even more secrets about his father’s past (not to mention a sinister-looking figure walking past the Octo-arms and Vulture wings). Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan) shows up to change the world, and his bed-ridden dad Norman (Chris Cooper) makes an appearance. And speaking of appearances, we got a glimpse at Rhino (Paul Giamatti) – in and out of his mech/tank suit – Electro (Jamie Foxx), and the Green Goblin/Hobgoblin/Harry Osborn. As this is only the first trailer, all substantial peeks at the three villains will most likely be held until February/March/April in the build-up to the May release. Up front, the three villains, regardless of how substantial their appearances will be, call back to the triple-villain overload of Spider-Man 3, but the issue with that film was how the villains were handled. I am, however, holding out hope that these three villains will work in the structure of this sequel, and if these villains (and the metallic enhancements) are an implied promise of or hint at the Sinister Six showing up in The Amazing Spider-Man 3 (and the films can handle three and six villains, respectively), let’s just say I’ll be very pleased with Webb, Kurtzman, Orci, and Pinker.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is the sequel to The Amazing Spider-Man (duh), Sony’s franchise reboot. Marc Webb is back in the director’s chair and works off a script from Jeff Pinker, Roberto Orci, and Alex Kurtzman, which follows Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) as he tries to balance school, being Spider-Man, and dating Gwen Stacey (Emma Stone) while keeping her safe. Meanwhile, Spider-Man must contend with the arrival of the Rhino (Paul Giamatti) and the superpowered Electro (Jamie Foxx) while Peter deals with the return of Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), a childhood friend and the son of OsCorp founder Norman Osborn (Chris Cooper). The Amazing Spider-Man 2 swings onto screens on May 2nd, 2014.
