Jagwar Ma’s debut album Howlin has surprisingly gone under the radar for some. But it’s been a year long treasure for those who were lucky enough to find it. There’s a lot going on in the Australian bands music, with various psychedelic/dance influences sprinkled all over the album.
The three-piece band brought the party to Brooklyn last night at Rough Trade, and dove straight into a 10-song set that was the perfect length. There’s a lot of bands you can trace influences from while listening to Jagwar Ma, such as Primal Scream and Tame Impala. But live, their blend of bass-throbbing psych-dance (very 90s Manchester) also channels Cut Copy and Kasabian. With the latter influences bleeding through more live, it makes sense that Noel Gallagher is a big fan of these guys.
They comfortably filled out the small Rough Trade space and had everyone dancing and bobbing their heads to their songs. If you’re not dancing or moving in any way, you’ll be lost in their dream induced melodies that are simply mesmerizing.
Give these guys some time and their popularity is sure to increase. They’re the real deal. Terminal 5 is not too far off for them.
