I didn’t grow up with music. Where I grew up, sports were big, not music. But as you can tell, I made music pretty big somewhere down the line. With that said, I didn’t grow up on Mazzy Star, so it took me a while to discover Mazzy Star. The discovery story is a rather special one, one of the better ones for me..ever..to be honest.

After experiencing my first Bonnaroo in 2011, my friends and I spent the morning packing our cars, ready to embark on a epic journey home from Tennessee to New York. We didn’t have the effort to pick our music, and turned to Pandora to do the work for us. While we were driving away the sun was perfectly sitting across the horizon, and suddenly, Mazzy Star’s “Fade Into You” came on. If you know the song, you can imagine how perfect this moment was, as I hit the road after a life changing weekend spent on a farm in Tennessee seeing great bands and drinking with great friends, new and old. It all came to an end, but this almost spiritual introduction to Mazzy Star through this song made a lasting impression that I will never ever forget.

It was surreal to get to see the band live, as they don’t tour often. I was lucky enough to attend the sold out show, and they didn’t disappoint. Draped in darkness, Hope Sandoval and the rest of the band were covered by projection of 8mm style films and backgrounds. Aside from that, you couldn’t see too much of the band other than basic outlines. All you had was their majestic tunes to guide you towards the light, and boy, were they pretty. But they were not fond of people talking over them (why go see Mazzy Star if you’re going to talk, Terminal 5 crowds are always notorious for this) or taking photos with flash. Hope called out fans using their flash by telling the crowd at one point “Would you all stop the jackass flash phones you all have?”

They found equal footing to play tracks from all four of their albums, highlights which include “California” from new album Seasons Of Your Day, as well as classic tracks such as “Into The Dust” and “So Tonight That I Might See”. The latter which was the third song that they played during their encore, which they walked off the stage after each song only to return for more. Of course, hearing the triumphant “Fade Into You” was unforgettable, creating another fantastic memory to go along with the song.
