Cut Copy played a free show last night at the more than intimate for them Le Poisson Rouge hosted by NPR and KCRW’s Metropolis + Morning Becomes Eclectic. MBE’s very own Jason Bentley started the night with a groovy DJ set that got us warmed up. Up next were Cut Copy, who had the crowd hot with anticipation as we were all very well aware that seeing a band like Cut Copy play a venue like this was a once in a blue moon sort of deal.
Naturally they played a healthy dose of new material off of Free Your Mind, their newly released album, which people are coming down on a little bit too harsh, if you ask me. “Free Your Mind” was a bold and exciting opener, that worked perfectly with Zonoscope’s “Where I’m Going.” To all of our pleasure they played all of their best cuts, especially In Ghost Colours material such as “So Haunted”, “Out There On The Ice”, and of course, “Hearts On Fire.”
Dan Whitford sang every word with high expression, throwing his hands in the air or guiding the words with a pose. Tim Hoey is the man to watch on stage, as he pounded away at the drums with his guitar, or guided it against the speakers, creating heavy sounds from the unlikeliest of places. Together, along with the rest of the band (Mitchell Scott & Ben Browning) they are able to create an instantly celebratory sound that makes you feel like life is infinate, and full of endless possibilites. They will make you dance, sing to your voice is shot, and wonder why the fuck they aren’t one of the biggest bands on earth. Any set that ends with the larger-than-life anthem of “Lights and Music” will do that to you.
By the end of their more than generous 13-song set (for a free show), which they packed in somehow just a bit over an hour. It was not only one of their best shows (I’ve now seen them 4 times), but one of the best shows I’ve seen this year, and I’ve seen quite a few.
They’ve already announced a return to NYC, which will go down at Terminal 5 on March 22 (tickets on sale Friday @ noon). It will sell out, and more will follow. I may just be there for each night of the run. They’re that good.
