It was great to see GEMS play in a place like Music Hall of Williamsburg, with some proper sound and space to let it properly expand within the room. They were invited to open for Anna Calvi, and it was yet another big step for the duo whose debut EP Medusa drops today. They played a gorgeous new song off the EP as well as all the wonderous tracks that have taken over me over the past year. They will be back in New York next month at Glasslands.
Prior to Anna Calvi’s set I didn’t know too much about her except that Brian Eno and Nick Cave gave her ringing endorsements, comparing her to Patti Smith. That was enough to sell me, and she didn’t disappoint. She had a strong confident nature on stage that was almost intimidating. Oh man, can she play the guitar. She has a very distinctive sound that really is unique to her. She has a new album called One Breath out now via Domino Records, and based upon what I heard, it’s not to be missed.
