In “Indifference”, we saw how each character has had difficulty in letting go, which was the clear cut theme of the episode.
Since Carol admitted to Rick that she was the one who brutally killed Karen and David, we were left wondering how Rick would handle the news. In the opening sequence we learn that Carol and Rick will be making a trip out to look for some supplies in food, but there are clearly ulterior motives to Rick’s decision to bring Carol, and only Carol, along for the ride. In the opening scene Carol sloppily explains to young Lizzie how you can change as a person in this world, while Rick walks through the area where Carol killed them, imagining it going down for himself. We see something in the works in Rick’s brain as he packs the car, and it hints that he no longer has trust for Carol. Rick and Carol are on their way in the car, when Carol brings up that she noticed Rick picked Maggie to hang back at the prison, noting that it was because she was someone Rick still trusted.
Meanwhile, we catch up with Tyreese, Daryl, Michonne, and Bob who last episode narrowly escaped a herd of zombies. Tyreese is down, thinking that they are too late on getting the medicine back to the sick at the prison. Bob urges him to keep moving. They soon discover a old continence store, but the only thing waiting for them are hungry zombies. Tyreese gets tangled with one but won’t let go until it ends up on to of him, and Bob shoots it in the head. “Why the hell woudn’t you let go?” Michonne asks. She then calls out Tyreese for his stupidity. “Anger makes you stupid. Stupid gets you killed.” Tyreese fires right back, calling her out for going out and searching for the Governor, something she hasn’t been able to let go. When he asks why she keeps doing it if she’s not angry at him anymore, she simply, and honestly, says “I don’t know.”
Rick and Carol wander into a house in search of some food or medicine. Carol has a close call with a zombie that stumbles down the stairs, but Rick is quick enough to pull her back. As it turns out there are two hippie youngsters named Sam and Anna who are currently taking up in the house. Interestingly they call the zombies skin eaters, and the guy has his dislocated shoulder fixed by Carol. She goes against Rick’s decision about having them help out, so Rick is forced to give Sam a gun and his watch. Carol also doesn’t bring up Sofia’s name when they ask if she lost a kid. Damn, Carol really has become cold. Carol and Rick finally discuss the fact that Rick didn’t bring up what Carol did yet, and Rick sort of avoids it..for now. They go out, collect some food, and go to meet up with Sam and Anna, but they see half of Anna’s leg on the ground along with a pack of zombies eating on one of them. So much for those two.
Tyreese, Daryl, Michonne, and Bob make it to the school and gather the materials, only Bob stumbles on something and acts suspicious, which Michonne notices. They get swarmed by zombies, some infected, some regular walkers. They narrowly make it out alive, but not without Bob almost losing his bag. It turns out it wasn’t medicine, but actually a bottle of liquor. The little chat that Bob had with Daryl before about getting Zach killed because of his alcoholism goes into play, and Daryl rightfully explodes on Bob (who was ready to draw out his gun!), threatening to serve him what is right if Bob takes a sip of the hard stuff before the people get their meds.
As Rick packs up the car, ready to return back to the prison, Carol is unable to open her door. Rick tells her that he thinks she made a bad choice doing what she did, and that he couldn’t possibly trust her, not with her kids around. Carol pleads and defends her decision, even bringing up the killing of Shane. But Rick made his decision before she left, and Carol soon accepts her fate, and gets her stuff packed in the other car, and is well on her way.
As you may have noticed, the theme in this episode was letting go. Rick had to let go of Carol, and his watch. Carol has to let go of the group. Michonne has to let go of The Governor. Tyreese has to let go of his anger. Bob needs to let go of his alcoholism. Daryl will soon have to let go of Carol as well.
Notes:
The song at the end of the episode was the demo version of Sharon Van Etten’s amazing song “Serpents.” One of my favorite songs of 2012. Stream it below.
We will be seeing Carol again soon. As well as The Governor, and possibly Morgan. It’s only a matter of when, and how.
How will Daryl react to the news of Carol’s exile, especially after being in a rage because of Bob?
Will Tyreese be pleased by this? Or will he be pissed that he didn’t get to extract revenge on Carol himself?
