After months of waiting, buzz from San Diego Comic Con, and last week’s Vine/Instagram teaser, the first trailer for Bryan Singer’s X-Men: Days of Future Past, his return to the franchise, is finally here, and it certainly impresses!
Despite the lack of Sentinels and other effects-heavy scenes, the trailer for X-Men: Days of Future Past delivers on character moments. Looking into the apocalyptic future ruled by the Sentinels, we catch glimpses of X-Men both old (Professor X (Sir Patrick Stewart), Magneto (Ian McKellen), Storm (Halle Berry), Rogue (Anna Paquin), Iceman (Shawn Ashmore), Kitty Pride (Elliot Page), and Wolverine (Hugh Jackman)) and new (Blink (Fan Bingbing), Bishop (Omar Sy), Warpath (Booboo Stewart), and Sunspot (Adan Canto)). Amidst the chaos of the Vietnam era and Nixon’s presidency, we can see that the conflict from X-Men: First Class has escalated to the point where Magneto (Michael Fassbender) is attacking what appears to be political delegations while Bolivar Trask (Peter Dinklage) butts heads with President Nixon over the mutant issue. Also shown are Beast’s (Nicholas Hoult) attempts to stop Magneto, Wolverine connecting with a younger Xavier (James McAvoy), and Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) being both kick-ass and terrified. There’s easily more to the film, and I’m ever eager to see it in theaters come next May.
X-Men: Days of Future Past is written by Simon Kinberg (based on a story he co-wrote with Matthew Vaughn and Jane Goldman, which is further based on Chris Claremont and John Byrne’s X-Men arc of the same name) and directed by Bryan Singer. The main casts of both the original X-Men trilogy and X-Men: First Class come together for this franchise unify-er, which pits Xavier and his students against Bolivar Trask and his army of Sentinels, designed to control the Earth’s mutant population, while future Xavier and Magneto attempt to prevent their apocalyptic future from happening. It is set for release on May 23, 2014.
